THE PASTOR’S FIRST YEAR

A pastor friend recently informed me that he had just been called to serve as the pastor of a church. He knew that I had pastored 5998094_sthree churches in my twenty-two years of ministry and asked if I had any advice. Of course I offered a few thoughts and have included them here. The first year or two are crucial to a successful ministry.

Below is the list that I will discuss in a series over the next few weeks.

  1. The first year you are their preacher; after that you start becoming their pastor.
  2. Be wise about making changes in the first year but use any crises to make wise changes.
  3. Forge key relationships with as many leaders in the church as possible.
  4. Identify the praying people in your church and get them to praying!
  5. Invest in the people to build leadership capital during the first year. You will need it when a crisis comes.
  6. Seek opportunities to lead the church to some early victories during your first year.
  7. If the previous pastor, a staff member, or member offers to give you the “scoop” on some of the “problem people,” politely decline. You will find out on your own through experience and discernment of the Holy Spirit.
  8. Use the first year to get the right people in the right seats on the “bus.”
  9. Use the first year to lead the church to spiritual renewal.
  10. Early on, begin to inform staff, leaders, volunteers, and so on about your family priorities i.e., God first, your family second, and the church third. You have to be the one to guard this to protect you, your marriage and family. Have regular quality time with your wife and children that does not include the church.
  11. Use the first two years to develop leaders and establish a disciple-making process.
  12. Prayerfully choose an inner circle of leaders to develop and then develop more in a concentric circle fashion.

    Allen, this will be the subject of one of the next follow-up articles. The short answer is: Investing in relationships with key leaders in the church builds trust. An “accumulation” of trust is called “leadership capitol.” Pastors rely on this built-up trust when they ask the church leaders and membership to make a decision that they might otherwise oppose.
